Beta Reading for Authors

Find out how your story really reads.

Thoughtful, reader-focused feedback on your manuscript before you publish, query or move into final editing. Discover what captivates, what confuses and where your story could become stronger.

More than “I liked it.”

Beta reading looks at your manuscript through the eyes of a real reader. The goal is not to rewrite your voice, but to identify the moments that work beautifully — and the places where readers may lose connection with the story.

A Reader's Perspective

What I look for while reading your manuscript

Your manuscript is considered as a complete reading experience, with particular attention paid to the elements that determine whether a reader stays immersed in the story.

01

Characters

Are the characters compelling, believable and emotionally engaging? Are their motivations and relationships convincing?

02

Pacing

Where does the story pull the reader forward, and where does momentum slow, rush or become repetitive?

03

World & Story

Is the world understandable and immersive? Are important story developments clear without excessive explanation?

04

Reader Impact

Which scenes create tension, curiosity or emotion — and where might a reader become confused or disconnected?

Example Beta Reader Report

Reader Response

Opening: The atmosphere is immediately intriguing, but I wanted a little more grounding before the terminology begins to accumulate.

Character: This exchange creates a much stronger sense of the relationship. The emotional tension feels convincing here.

Pacing: The revelation is interesting, although delaying it slightly could make the preceding scene more suspenseful.

Your Feedback

You receive clear, practical reader feedback.

Rather than vague impressions, you receive organised feedback explaining how the manuscript works from a reader's point of view. The purpose is to help you decide what — if anything — you want to change before the next stage of your book.

  • Overall reader report
  • Character and relationship feedback
  • Pacing and engagement observations
  • Plot clarity and continuity notes
  • World-building and setting feedback
  • Confusing or under-explained moments identified
  • Strong scenes and successful elements highlighted
  • Constructive suggestions for revision

Questions

Beta reading FAQ

Is beta reading the same as editing?

No. Beta reading focuses primarily on the experience of reading the manuscript — story, characters, pacing, clarity and emotional impact. It is not a replacement for copyediting or proofreading.

When should I use a beta reader?

Beta reading is generally most useful once you have completed your own major revisions and want an outside reader's perspective before querying, editing or publishing.

Will you tell me what needs to be rewritten?

I will identify places where the reading experience could be stronger and explain why. The creative decisions remain yours; the aim is to help you see the manuscript through another reader's eyes.

Do you beta read fantasy and science fiction?

Yes. Speculative fiction, fantasy, science fiction and science-fantasy are particularly welcome, including manuscripts with extensive world-building.

How much does beta reading cost?

Pricing depends on manuscript length and the level of feedback required. Send your approximate word count and a little information about the manuscript for a quote.
